Steven Gerrard his hit back at suggestions he only has a heart for Liverpool, as the new Aston Villa boss pointed to his wild celebrations on the Villa Park touchline in the win over Brighton as evidence he is 'all in' to the cause at his new club.

The Villa head coach made a perfect start to life as a Premier League manager when Graham Potter's side were downed by two late Villa goals from Ollie Watkins and Tyrone Mings at the weekend.

And the Villa boss cut an emotional figure in the dugout as he kicked every ball and pumped fists throughout.

His celebrations confirmed the truth. Forget about stepping stones and gambles. Gerrard has come to Villa to be a success – and in that task, he is fully committed.

“I will always be as authentic as I can,” he said to the BBC. “If anyone doubts me watch me after those goals. That is real.

“They are the buzzes, the highs you miss as a player. They are why you want to stay in the game. They are my medicine.”

“You are trying to control your emotions, but inside you are kicking every ball,” he said.

“I want to coach from the side, I want to be visible and help them, guide them. Inside is what was with me as a player, that will to win, that drive. You should see me in staff games, five v five, six v six, I hate losing.”
