Aston Villa's move for Roma goalkeeper Robin Olsen is in the “final stages” according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The claret and blue have been eager to add a third goalkeeper to their books to add more backup to Jed Steer and Emi Martinez.

And Roma boss Jose Mourinho has done Villa head coach Steven Gerrard a favour having sanctioned his departure, which has seen him agree to terminate Olsen's loan move at Sheffield United.

That is set to pave the way for Olsen to join Villa with personal terms all agreed on a deal until the end of the season.

Romano said on Twitter: “Robin Olsen from Sheffield to Aston Villa now at final stages, agreement in place. Last details to be resolved.

“AS Roma will cancel loan to Sheffield and then will let Olsen join Aston Villa until the end of the season. Olsen already agreed personal terms with Villa.”

The news comes after former Sheffield United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny told the Blades to agree to terminate the loan of Olsen so he can seal his switch.

Olsen is no stranger to the Premier League, having spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan with Everton. He was then sent to the Blades this term but has not nailed down a first-team place.

And Kenny says he would have no problem in cancelling the loan of Olsen having failed to be impressed.

“Listen, for me, it’s a no brainer,” Kenny told Football Insider.

“If he has the chance to go to Villa then fair enough, it’s a good move for them, he’s only here on loan anyway.

“I can’t see him getting back in the team and I wasn’t impressed with him when he did play.

“That’s just my opinion. Get him gone and get him off the wage bill and that gives us the chance to get someone else in.

“That person can actually be of use to us instead of sitting on the bench doing nothing.

“It’s a case of getting rid of a player who isn’t contributing and having the opportunity to bring in a quality player.

“It just makes sense to me.”

Villa have already made three signings this window with Philippe Coutinho, Lucas Digne and Kerr Smith all arriving, and they are also being linked with a move for Brighton's Yves Bissouma.
