Saints predicted team for Liverpool trip – a tactical rethink?

SAINTS travel to Liverpool on Saturday, November 27, on the back of a disappointing 2-1 defeat at then-bottom of the table Norwich.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s plans were heavily disrupted pre-match with the late absences of Stuart Armstrong, Moussa Djenepo and Nathan Redmond.

The latter is likely to be back and available while the other two could be sidelined yet again.

Saints looked to be hitting some real form but the second-half performance at Carrow Road was a blow, and travelling to Anfield to face a side who defeated Arsenal 4-0 and Porto 2-0 there in the last week will not be easy.

It also kicks off a busy run of games going into the December period, where squad rotation will be key – Saints face Leicester on the Wednesday after, before welcoming Brighton also to St Mary’s on the weekend.

Here’s how we think Hasenhuttl will line up his side to face Liverpool at Anfield:

Goalkeeper

Alex McCarthy didn’t cover himself in glory during the 2-1 defeat at Norwich, but having played every Premier League game of the campaign he is likely to retain the shirt once more.

Saints' supporters hoped Alex McCarthy would be able to stop both goals at Norwich

Defence

For once, I find this defence a challenge to predict. Kyle Walker-Peters was caught out for Norwich’s first goal and Romain Perraud could be afforded a chance – but I’m gambling and saying it will be unchanged.

Tino Livramento, Jan Bednarek and Mohammed Salisu all to start again. Jack Stephens is on his way back from injury and back in training, but there’s a busy schedule ahead so he won’t be rushed.

Tino Livramento has looked tired in the last two games and could be due a rest

Midfield

The major change could be a switch to a 4-5-1, as Hasenhuttl has done so in some matches against the ‘tougher’ teams. As a result, it will see Oriol Romeu deployed as the pivot – where he can drop in and make the central-defence a trio out of possession.

Skipper James Ward-Prowse was impressive despite defeat at Norwich while Hasenhuttl displayed faith in Ibrahima Diallo to start him as a 10. Those two will make a central pairing this time, just ahead of Romeu.

Meanwhile, Saints will welcome the return of Nathan Redmond on the right, after he missed the last two, and injuries should mean Moi Elyounoussi retains his position on the left despite a slight dip in performances. Stuart Armstrong and Moussa Djenepo were ruled out at Norwich through fresh injury concerns.

As injury diminishes Saints' attacking midfielder options, Nathan Redmond will be a welcomed returnee

Attack

That leaves only one forward, with Redmond and Elyounoussi supporting in possession. Given his recent form – five goals in six in all competitions for club and country – that man will be Che Adams, with Armando Broja and Adam Armstrong on the bench to turn to when needed.

Che Adams has two goals in the last three Premier League fixtures
