Thibaut Courtois has claimed that Eden Hazard is determined to be a success at Real Madrid despite being linked with a return to the Premier League.

Chelsea and Newcastle United have been linked with a move for the 30-year-old winger in recent months, despite having around two-and-a-half years remaining on his contract with Los Blancos.

Hazard moved to the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer of 2019 from the Blues, but life in the Spanish capital has not been easy for the Belgium international – with his time there marred by injury problems.

With Hazard struggling to get going at Madrid, it comes as no surprise that he is being strongly linked with a return to England, but that is not what he wants to do, according to Courtois.

The former Chelsea goalkeeper, when speaking to Reuters, said: “I have known Eden for a long time and know that his dream was to play for Real Madrid. It is a shame it has not worked out yet as everyone would like it to.

“I can see that he has got the desire, joy and he wants to help the team. He is looking to improve. It is not easy to take back your best form when you have not played for the last two and a half years.

“He has shown in his entire career he is one of the best players in the world. He has not been able to show that recently.

“But that talent is not gone and I am sure he will get it back, so we cannot kill him believing he is an average player because he is not.”

In May of this year, Hazard himself opened up on his future at Real Madrid and revealed that he could not see himself away from the Spanish capital at the moment.

He said: “I have a three-year contract with Real Madrid, going back to England is out of the question. Everyone knows that my first two years were not good, so first I want to prove myself at Real Madrid.

“Certainly, I do not see myself leaving Madrid given the situation of the contract. I know myself and I know when I am in shape. If that is the case, I can give everything for Real next season. That is my plan.”

Hazard made it clear back then that he did not have any plans to leave Madrid, but his manager Carlo Ancelotti insisted he would not stop him from moving on should he wish to do so.

When asked specifically about Hazard's future, Ancelotti said: “Never in my career as a coach have I forced a player to stay when they want to leave. In my own personal opinion, I do not have any doubts about that.”

As mentioned above, Hazard has also been linked with a move to Newcastle, with the Magpies now boasting incredible wealth after their £300million takeover.

However, Glen Johnson does not think he should move to St. James' Park.

Speaking to BettingOdds, Johnson said: “Right now I’d have to say no. Obviously we’ve all been fans of Eden for years but if we’re honest he’s waved the white flag the last few.

“So if he goes to Newcastle, is he going to be the man who walks into the dressing room and gets everyone rallied and wants to fight every weekend to stay in the Premier League? I’m not so sure.”

The former Chelsea defender added: “Obviously when things are going rosy he’s unreal but I’m not sure he’ll be one of those players that you’d want in the trenches with you.

“And I think it would be a bad move for Newcastle. They need players who can roll their sleeves up and really go to war with teams, certainly in the early days.”
